The current session of the Commission on Sustainable Development is taking place during an unprecedented global economic crisis unraveling before us. That’s what Grenada’s representative Ambassador Dessima Williams told the Commission this week as it opened a two-week session attempting to chart a sustainable course of action to strengthen long-neglected agricultural sectors and ensure that more food could be grown in a smarter and greener way, especially in Africa. Speaking on behalf of the Alliance of Small Island States – AOSIS, Ms. Williams says at the same time, the impacts of climate change are already occurring in our communities, with plainly observable impacts and at a rate faster than existing scientific models can even assess.

 boy throwing bottled waterThe task of the UN Department of Public Information (DPI), to provide accurate, impartial, timely, comprehensive and relevant information on the activities of the Organization is a critical one.
That’s what Jamaica’s representative Ambassador Raymond Wolfe told the Committee on Information as its continued its general debate on UN information activities. The committee is an intergovernmental body charged with reviewing progress in the field of United Nations public information. Ambassador Wolfe says the DPI should be commended for its successes over the past year which have been realized through increased global media coverage of critical events on the UN’s agenda, including financing for development, climate change and the discussions on the global food and financial and economic crises; issues related to Africa, violence against women, as well as the Millennium Development Goals.

Trinidad and Tobago also noted that the Department of Public Information (DPI) has played a critical role in disseminating information to a growing audience on the work of the United Nations in such major areas as poverty eradication, conflict prevention, sustainable development, human rights and Africa’s needs.
Its representative Cherry Ann Millard White says her government is pleased that the Committee on Information continues to discharge fully its oversight role on the vital work of the DPI.

The World Bank says jobs and education are critical in the fight against crime and violence among youth

Employment generation and incentives for completing education emerged as critical issues to fight crime and violence among youth in the Caribbean. In an unprecedented effort to support countries in the region and discuss new initiatives to help youth-at-risk, the World Bank and the Commonwealth Secretariat launched a 2-day Regional Caribbean Conference on Keeping Boys out of Risk.
